The future of Alloy
So with the GMTK Jam 2021 now behind us we're starting to focus on the future of Alloy.
State of the next build:
Some of the issues with the Game Jam build of it that we've identified or been notified about by comments on the game are:
- Text and UI are not on the same level of visual quality as the rest of the game [Fix in development]
- Text can be hard to read in some levels-circumstances [Fix in development]
- Walking into a closed door kills the block [Fixed in upcoming build]
- Music transitions can be a bit too sharp [Fixed in upcoming build]
- A block swap that is not triggered by the player (i.e walking into the kiln) will not trigger a music transition [Fixed in upcoming build]
The future:
We're planning on keeping development going to give the game a more complete feel and fully exploring the concept that it introduces.
Here are some points on what we've got in store:
- More alloys (block types) with unique abilities to add more complexity and variation to gameplay
- Save game and level select
- UI overhaul to align it with the rest of the art style
- A level editor for players to create their own puzzles (I haven't talked about this with the rest of the team so hopefully I'm not making anyone mad with this)
- More accessibility features
- Black bars behind text
- Allow customization of text size
- Control-scheme customization
Some time at the start of this journey to expand the development will also involve a rather substantial fix-up of the codebase since it is currently very Game Jam-y and will inevitably lead to quite some tech debt building up if left as is.
Last but not least...
As we're looking at polishing the game up we could do with a person on the team that is more focused on creating art for it. If you feel like this would be something you're interested in, give any one of us a shout!
We've got plenty of ideas for future titles that we'd like to work on so if we get along you'd be more than welcome to stick around as the official main art-person!
Thank you for playing and for your feedback!
